The Hunt for a Florist Continues...

After the three $6,000 quotes for florists, we decided to pursue some alternative options. From the beginning, we had ruled out DIY centerpieces... but with such outrageous quotes for things that would die in a few days, we decided to check out the LA Flower Market!

The wonderful Daniel Kiyoi and I got up ridiculously early Thursday morning, and braved downtown LA to scope out this flower mecca. The Flower Market is basically a huge warehouse where tons of wholesale dealers come to sell flowers every day- kinda like a farmer's market, but every day! It turns out that Lana and Daniel live about 5 minutes from the Flower Market/Fashion District, so it was actually pretty easy to get there. We paid our $5 for parking, walked around the corner, and found this:

Literally every single type of flower that you could ever want, at ridiculously cheap prices! Daniel and I spent a marvelous hour wandering around, looking at all the options. I think that Daniel should go into the floral business- he had so many great ideas!

After we finished with the actual market, we decided to check out the many florists that line the surrounding streets. We had decided that if we could get the centerpieces for a reasonable price, then we would go ahead and have one of these wholesale florists do them. I wasn't sure what we'd be talking about price-wise, but hoped that we could find some nice centerpieces for less than the $100-150 that the SB florists had been quoting us. We wandered around, and then I finally worked up the courage to ask these florists for prices on the sample pieces that they had displayed.
I love me some ranuculus!

I love being pleasantly surprised! While some was lost in the language barrier, most of these florists were quoting me anywhere from $30-60 for beautiful, lush, gorgeous centerpieces (both short and tall!

We are definitely going to pursue this option a bit further. I think we'll still have out bouquets and personal flowers made by a local florist, and splurge a bit, but wholesale florists have allowed me to dream a little bit more about our centerpiece designs! There are also a few wholesale florists in Carpinteria, so I'm going to check out those next week as well. Thank goodness for alternative options!
